2mm Loose Faceted Ruby Gemstone Bead String Description:
Bead, Jablonex Czech fire-polished glass, ruby red, 2mm faceted round. Sold per 16-inch strand.
These beads, imported from the Czech Republic, are machine faceted, then polished by glazing inside a red-hot oven. This gives them beautiful, glistening colors with a "softer" look and a smoother feel at a considerably lower price than the machine- polished Austrian crystal. They are temporarily strung in 16-inch strands or equivalent in loose beads. Slight imperfections are to be expected and add to the allure of these much sought after beads.
What is ruby?
A Ruby is a pink to blood red gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The common red color is caused mainly by the element chromium. Its name comes from ruber, Latin for red. Other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires. It is considered one of the four precious stones, together with the sapphire, the emerald and the diamond.
Prices of rubies are primarily determined by color. The brightest and best "red" called pigeon blood red, commands a huge premium over other rubies of similar quality. After color follows clarity: similar to diamonds, a clear stone will command a premium, but a ruby without any needle-like rutile inclusions will indicate the stone has been treated one way or another. Cut and carat (size) also determine the price.

The name "Sapphire" (Saphir French or German, Zafir Spanish, Zaffiro Italian) is originally derived from Greek (sappheiros), the Sanskrit word sanipruja ("dear to Saturn"), and the Hebrew word sappir, meaning gem. The biblical Sapphira was a woman who was executed by God for lying. The oldest Sapphire mines are situated in Ceylon, or Sri Lanka.

Sapphire is one of the most popular jewelry stones. The blue variety is most often used in jewelry, but the yellow, pink, and orange stones are also popular. A rare orange-pink variety, known as padparadschah, is even more valued than blue sapphire. Stones displaying asterism are polished as cabochons, and, if clear, are extremely valuable. Blue sapphire is sometimes carved into cameos or small figures. Synthetic sapphire is often used as a substitute for the natural material.
